Historical knowledge:
In prechristian times it was called Monte di Apollo, successively Castelforte di Chiuscio and Salpio or Castrum Salapinum. With the coming of Christianity and the parisch worship of San Cervasio, it assumed the name Castrum Plebis, which has been perfected in what is today’s Città della Pieve.
Situated on the frontier between Umbria and Toscana, suffers Barbarian invasions and chiefly it was damaged by the Goths. At the beginning of the XIIIth century it enjoys a period of freedom, then it belongs to Federico IInd and to Perugia in 1230.
1243 it returns to Federico IInd, who eulogized fidelity and allowed privileges and enlargement of the territory. When Federico died, Perugia punishes the Ghibelline city, having it depopulated by Raniero of Burgarello. In the 1300’s it was a castle submissive to Perugia which impose them taxes and ask for Soldiers. Works of the fortress began in 1326 and was fortified in 1371 and 1374. During the popular and noble wars, it was occupied by Biordo Michelotti and Braccio Fortebraccio until 1424, it was never incorporated in the States of the Church. After death of Pope Martino Vth it returns under Perugian protection and government. At the beginning of the 500’s, it suffers plundering by Valentino who had Paolo Orsini and the Duke of Gravina killed in the fortress for having conspired against him. With providing of Pope Clemente VIIth , Castello della Pieve was separated from the Perugian legation in 1529 to be governed directly the Holy See.
