Deruta
Historical knowledge:
From probable roman origins, Deruta was under Perugian dominion since the XIth century to which it remains almost always faithful, following common events. It was fortified in the XIIth century and in the XIIIth century ceramic – working was introduced. Besieged by Braccio of Montone in 1408, heavily damaged in the 1500’s by Cesare Borgia and plundered by Braccio Baglioni. During the “Salt War” between Perugia and Pio IIrd, Deruta sided for the Pope, obtaining like this exemption of the taxes.
Deruta arises on a hillock and is an important agricultural centre rich of industrial arts and crafts manufacturing. Ancient tradition have here the artistical-ceramics industry which go back to the 500’s.
Places to visit:
- The Sant’Angelo Church with its roman gothic facade
- The Municipal Palace, seat of the town picture gallery and museum of ceramics
- The Museum which preserves the Magnini collection
- The San Francesco (350’s-400’s) and Abbot Sant’Antonio Churches
- The Castle with the San Donato Church and numerous ex-voto in majolica
- The ruins of the Casalina Castle
- The locality Fanciullata in Sant’Angelo di Celle, the church where there’s preserved the Madonna of Ranuccio.
